REPORTING

I craft compelling narratives while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and integrity. As a student journalist, I'm uniquely capable of representing and informing my community in ways larger publications can't. I strive to provide insightful coverage that not only informs but also inspires meaningful conversations.

A SLICE OF THE DISTRICT PIE

When my school district changed how it elects its board of trustees, I reached out to a local activist group that was spreading the word and interviewed members who were also parents, getting their perspectives firsthand. I also interviewed a board member and attended board meetings to better understand their role and hear community feedback directly. To ensure our coverage captured every angle, I grouped several of our staff writers' pieces into one package for our magazine, making sure all voices were heard. My article received thousands of views online within a month and even caught the attention of a Mercury News reporter, who told me it inspired her to look into the issue herself.

CUPERTINO GARAGE SALE

One of my first stories on staff was covering our city's annual garage sale event, and I jumped in headfirst by walking around Cupertino for three hours with my co-writer, taking photos and interviewing every seller we could find. I was fascinated by the stories behind each sale, which ranged from someone parting with 19th-century dental equipment to a longtime resident who had watched our city evolve over seventy years and was selling honey from his own bees. These conversations shaped the rest of my time on staff by inspiring me to look for history and meaning in even the smallest events and interactions.

ON THE STREETS OF S.F.

For the 2023 APEC conference in San Francisco—a major international summit that brought together leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region—as a news editor, I led coverage by brainstorming pitches to capture every angle. My co-editor and I created a package with stories on how APEC impacted local business owners, the voices of protestors and the role of AAPI pioneers in both the conference and the protests. My co-editor and I coordinated the entire trip, not only planning the logistics of getting to San Francisco and organizing our staff, but also ensuring that photography, filming, and interviews ran smoothly throughout the day. The experience taught me how to manage complex coverage while bringing diverse perspectives to our readers.

SPORTS GAME REVIEWS

Covering sports games requires constant attention to detail, from capturing key plays through dynamic photography to keeping track of the game’s momentum. During my recent coverage of a Varsity Boys Basketball game, I focused on these elements, ensuring I didn’t miss any crucial details. After the game, I interviewed players to capture their perspectives, which added depth to my detailed game review. The result was a comprehensive recap that brought the excitement of the game to life for our readers.
